West to Miss Conference Opener

Cal State Northridge’s soccer team will begin its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule Friday without forward Keith West.

West, a senior from Kennedy High and Glendale College, sustained a broken collarbone last Friday in the final minutes of a 2-0 loss to the University of San Diego at North Campus Stadium. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

West is tied for second on the team with four goals and third in scoring with 10 points. Coach Marwan Ass’ad said Nelson Townes, a senior from Agoura, probably will replace West in the starting lineup against San Diego State (6-4) at Northridge. The Matadors (6-3) play post to Cal State Fullerton (6-3-1) on Sunday.

“I feel bad for Keith, but we have to go forward,” Ass’ad said. “I still like our team and love our chances in league.”

The Master’s College men’s team is ranked 12th in the NAIA Division I poll.

The Mustangs had a 9-1-1 record at the start of the week.

Tennis

Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg will head a 12-player draw in the second-annual Digital PC Champions Tournament Oct. 12-16 at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks. Defending champion Connors, who started the Champions Tour for players 35 and over last year, is seeded No. 1.

The $150,000 tournament will open at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with Guillermo Vilas facing Tim Gullickson, followed by a match between Roscoe Tanner and Larry Stefanki. The field will include 1993 finalist Johan Kriek, Jose-Luis Clerc, Peter Fleming, John Lloyd, Tom Gullickson and Mel Purcell.

Baseball

Former El Camino Real High left-hander Randy Wolf and former Crespi catcher Casey Snow are among 72 college freshmen and sophomores who have been chosen to participate in the USA baseball trials Nov. 1-7 in Homestead, Fla.

The trials will serve as a steppingstone toward playing for the U.S. national baseball team next summer and in the 1996 Olympics.

Wolf, a freshman at Pepperdine, played in the U.S. Olympic festival last summer in St. Louis. Snow, a sophomore at Long Beach State, played in the USA baseball trials last fall.

Golf

Don Fiala of Simi Valley shot a three-under-par 68 on Monday to win a California Players Tour event at Simi Hills golf course.

The event was the third for the newly formed satellite tour, which is based in Newbury Park. Fiala won $650.

Paul Holtby of Moorpark was second with a 69.

Football

Thousand Oaks running back Mike Thomas, who was taken from the field in an ambulance last Friday, will miss this week’s game because of a hip pointer, Coach Bob Richards said.

Thomas, the Lancers’ second-leading rusher, was hit in the right hip by a Westlake player.

Auto Racing

Ventura Raceway has scheduled an awards banquet at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Friday. Trophy presentations to division champions and door prizes will be included.

After 14 events, Palmdale’s Lance Hooper leads the NASCAR All-American Challenge Drivers Featherlite Southwest Tour.

Hooper, with 2,007 points, has a 33-point lead over his closest competitor. Bob Lyon of Newhall has 1,938 points and is in fourth place.
