It Was Hardly the Feel-Good Game of Season

They’re still mourning the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-8 wipeout of their beloved San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park last Sunday. It’s not a pretty thing.

Chuck Nevius of the San Francisco Chronicle was in no mood to be consoled by defensive end Charles Mann, who told him the 49ers could turn the defeat into a positive experience.

Said Nevius: “Pardon me, Charles. I think you’ll find if you will check your ticket that you have wandered into the wrong movie. This was not a life-affirming experience.

“This was disaster. This was standing on the edge of mediocrity and finding that someone has buttered the rink. This was ground zero, rock-bottom calamity, with no hope on the horizon.”

Trivia time: Of the three stadiums that have played host to a World Series and a Super Bowl, which one is not located in California?

Name game: Oliver McCall? Michael Moorer?

“The names are hard to remember, both of them,” Rock Newman, Riddick Bowe’s manager, told the Washington Post.

For the record, McCall is the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, Moorer the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Assn. champion.

NFL quiz: If you are in a mood to reminisce about the NFL in its 75th anniversary year, here’s something for you. There is only one city that has been represented in every NFL season.

It might not suit him: Cleveland Brown quarterback Vinny Testaverde is repaying his offensive linemen by giving each a new suit.

But Testaverde isn’t sure about what suit center Steve Everett will choose, mainly because his normal locker room attire includes combat fatigues or torn jeans, a ragged T-shirt or no shirt at all.

Said Testaverde: “It might be a waste of $1,000, but at least he can say he has one.”

Uh, not exactly: In his book, “Seeing Red,” about Red Auerbach, Dan Shaughnessy related a story about how fellow Boston Globe sportswriter Jackie MacMullan met the crusty Boston Celtic executive.

MacMullan was covering a college basketball game and Auerbach was sitting next to her on press row. During a timeout, Auerbach asked her what she thought and MacMullan went into great detail about the game.

“And he said, ‘No, what do you think of the cheerleaders? Aren’t you the cheerleading coach?’ ”

Trivia answer: The Metrodome in Minneapolis, site of the World Series in 1987 and 1991 and Super Bowl XXVI in 1992.
