Newport Beach

City Council Meeting

When: Monday, 2 and 7 p.m.

Where: Council chambers, 3300 Newport Blvd.

What: The council will decide whether to create a public benefits corporation. The corporation would accept donations to the city from the public. The council will also have a public hearing on a proposed noise ordinance. The council will consider imposing a 6,000-pound weight limit for trucks on Marigold Avenue in Corona del Mar. Also on the agenda is a discussion of a proposed public nuisance abatement ordinance.

Laguna Niguel

Planning Commission

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Where: City Council Chambers, 27801 La Paz Road

What: The commission will consider a request from Tutor Time child-care centers to open a preschool in the Laguna Heights Marketplace shopping center. The national chain wants to provide day care for 150 students in a 7,881-square-foot building with two playgrounds. Nearby residents have raised concerns about increased traffic and noise. Commissioners have questioned the safety of children being dropped off in a shopping center, where large trucks make deliveries to the PayLess and Lucky stores.

Irvine

City Council Meeting

When: Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.

Where: One Civic Center Plaza

What: The council will discuss programs and services at Rancho San Joaquin and Lakeview senior centers. It will also consider whether to offer space at the centers to other community organizations. After the Lakeview Senior Center opened last spring, the city considered closing the 15-year-old Rancho San Joaquin Senior Center. The Senior Citizens Council and the city’s Community Services Commission have recommended that the Rancho center remain open at least through next June. The Rancho center is in Rancho San Joaquin village near University Park and UC Irvine. The Lakeview center is in Woodbridge village. The council will also look at a proposed incentive package for local businesses. The council rejected several elements of the incentive package at a previous meeting.

Orange Unified School District

board meeting

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Where: Administration Center, 1401 N. Handy St.

What: The board will discuss whether to contract with a private company, Education Alternatives Inc. for some services. The company manages schools in Florida, Maryland and Connecticut.
