Board Requests ’99 Super Bowl at Coliseum
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a letter to NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue requesting that the 1999 Super Bowl be held at the Coliseum.
The NFL is scheduled to vote on the site Nov. 2.
The letter is somewhat in response to comments made by Tagliabue recently. Tagliabue had suggested that the league assist Los Angeles in construction of a new stadium that would be a semi-regular site for the Super Bowl. Tagliabue later said that County officials had initiated the discussion.
Both comments were disputed by Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who co-authored the letter with Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke.
“Building a new stadium in Los Angeles will be unnecessary once we get a long-term lease with the Raiders, which will enable us to arrange for the financing of luxury boxes and improvements that would make the Coliseum a world-class facility for the 21st Century,” Antonovich said in a statement. “Neither myself nor the other three members of the Coliseum Commission had any discussions with commissioner Tagliabue about building a new stadium before his proposal became public.”
