New Los Altos Medical Director Named

Lee D. Yoseloff has been appointed medical director of the Los Altos Hospital and Mental Health Center in Long Beach. Yoseloff, a Long Beach native, has been practicing psychiatry in Long Beach since 1978.

Jim Deaton, president of the Teachers Assn. of Long Beach, is a finalist for the National Football League’s Teacher of the Year Award. Deaton, who has taught 28 years in the Long Beach Unified School District, was nominated for the award by Mark Carrier, safety for the Chicago Bears. Deaton was Carrier’s fourth-grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School in Long Beach.

First United Methodist Church in Long Beach has appointed Paula Ferris as senior pastor. Ferris, who holds a doctorate in theology, plans to help the church, one of the oldest in Long Beach, continue its mission to serve the city’s disadvantaged.

Rafael Garfiaz of Long Beach won $30,000 in “The Big Spin.” He bought the winning ticket at P & B Liquor Jr. Market in Long Beach.

Eugene Coodley, chief of internal medicine at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Long Beach, recently published “Odyssey of a Physician,” a book describing the highlights of his career and the lessons he learned along the way.

Seth Grossman, a 1990 Cerritos High School graduate, has been selected to teach English at a business college in Guanghzou, China. Grossman, a 1994 Princeton graduate, majored in Chinese history and American studies. He plans a career in the foreign service.

Adela Giessen, a Long Beach police services assistant, has won the Urban Families Initiative Award from Cal State Long Beach for her work with local children, youths and families.

Barbara Enlow, a Huntington Beach business owner, is the first woman elected to chair the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center board of directors. Enlow, co-owner of Crown Cleaners, previously chaired the Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital board of directors.

Ron Sorber has been named a director of the Heart Assn. of Lakewood. Sorber, who owns R & J Photo in Bellflower, is also a member of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Los Angeles Police Officers Joe Cordova of Bellflower and Ruben Ornelas of Whittier were honored for heroism by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. The officers responded to a domestic dispute and found a father holding his 3-year-old daughter at gunpoint. The suspect was shot and killed, and the child was rescued.

Long Beach residents Michael and Lisa Osborne donated $50,000 to Cal State Long Beach’s new events center. Michael Osborne, a former University of Nebraska football player, is a Long Beach business owner.

Tramell Turner, a sophomore at Dominguez High School in Compton, recently won a bronze medal in video and filmmaking at the annual NAACP National Convention at the University of Chicago. More than 3,000 students attended. Turner competed against 25 contestants.

Long Beach resident Alfredo Nevarez won a $7,500 scholarship from the Toyota Motors/National Hispanic Scholarship Fund for the 1994-95 academic year. Nevarez is majoring in business administration at USC.

Surgeon Ross M. Miller Jr., former chief of staff at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, is being honored by the city of Lynwood for his contributions to the community. His picture will join others on the Wall of Fame in the Lynwood Community Center.
