Trustees OK Plans for Elementary School

Share

Saddleback Valley Unified School District trustees have approved preliminary plans for a new elementary school in the Rancho Trabuco neighborhood.

District officials estimate that the school could be completed and opened by January, 1997. Board approval to award construction bids will be contingent upon the sale of Mello-Roos bonds in early or mid-1995.

Trustees reviewed design drawings for the school during a board meeting this week before giving approval to proceed. The district has spent $4 million for the school’s land at Rancho Trabuco and Melinda Road. Nearly $425,000 has been spent for design work.

The total cost for the school has been put at $8 million.

The Mello-Roos districts for the bonds were formed in the late 1980s. Bonds sold in 1991 from the area have gone toward the purchase of the school site, plus construction projects, such as Rancho Margarita Intermediate School and Trabuco Hills High School.

The architectural firm chosen for the new school has designed five other elementary schools in the district.

Plans call for a Spanish motif, including a bell tower, tiled roofs and courtyards.

The school is expected to accommodate 827 students.
