ECHO PARK : Episcopal Diocese to Open Center
A dedication service is scheduled Saturday for a $12-million, 102,000-square-foot center that will serve as the new administrative headquarters of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, officials said.
More than 2,000 guests are expected to attend the 11 a.m. ceremony outside the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave., said Provost John Bruno.
Formerly the site of St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, razed two years ago, the new center will include a 300-seat cathedral, office space, a gymnasium and underground parking, Bruno said.
The center also will house El Centro del Pueblo, a community service agency, and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Central High Continuation School, he said.
Episcopal Diocese staff had been housed at a Downtown building at 1220 W. 4th St. since 1962. That site was sold in 1987 to Unocal for more than $3 million, said Robert Williams, communications director for the diocese.
The Rt. Rev. Frederick H. Borsch decided to move diocese headquarters from Downtown to Echo Park to be closer to the inner city, church officials said.
The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles serves the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura, totaling 80,000 congregation members. The congregation in Echo Park totals 300 members.
