It’s taken 23 years of debate, lawsuits and destruction, but downtown Brea is finally showing signs of new life.

The historic downtown strip along Brea Boulevard is the site of a controversial redevelopment effort that resulted in the bulldozing of several landmarks, including the Red Lantern Theater, where Judy Garland once performed.

Gateway Center, the first phase of the redevelopment project, is expected the open later this fall. The 22-acre shopping complex consists of a supermarket, restaurants and specialty shops. By 1996, officials hope to add a pedestrian mall featuring movie theaters, fountains and public art.
