A grant of $50,400 has been awarded to Students Run L. A., a nonprofit organization that trains high school-age youths for the Los Angeles Marathon.

Provided by the Amateur Athletic Foundation in Los Angeles, the money will go toward buying uniforms and other equipment needed for the five-month training program.

Originally a small-scale project of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Students Run L. A. is now a countywide effort to get children ready for the marathon, which takes place in March.

The project involves more than 100 teachers and 1,100 students from public and private schools, as well as continuation school programs.

At least 12 public high schools in the San Fernando Valley will send their students to the after-school training sessions, school officials said.
