COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Receiver’s Performance Was Polished

Wide receiver Avery Anderson, a superstitious sort, credited his nail polish for part of his success Saturday night, when he caught three passes for 73 yards against Oregon State.

Last season, he painted his nails black before games and, when it was reported in a newspaper, was kidded by teammates and stopped. “I hadn’t painted my nails this season at all before Saturday,” he said.

With right guard Matt Soenksen’s return after missing two games because of an arch injury, the Bruins have four-fifths of their starting offensive line intact for the first time since the second game of the season. Only right tackle Paul Kennedy, who is out for the season, is missing. . . . Starting quarterback Wayne Cook and reserve Ryan Fien are sharing time almost equally in preparation for playing Arizona. . . . Linebacker Donnie Edwards leads the Bruins in virtually every defensive category, including tackles (66), sacks (8 1/2), tackles for loss (13) and interceptions (2).
