Ten inmates were stabbed and at least six more received other injuries in a riot at the Pitchess jail Wednesday night, authorities said.

The fight broke out just before 9 p.m. in a dorm at the East Facility of the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho and involved all 140 inmates housed in that dorm, said Sgt. Ron Spear of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The 15-minute fight was between African American and Latino inmates, Spear said. Deputies broke up the riot with “sting ball” grenades and rubber bullets.

“The inmates broke up some toilets and used the shards of ceramic as weapons,” Spear said.

Two inmates in critical condition with chest wounds were airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Charlotte Kramer.

Two other inmates were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where their conditions were listed as critical and serious, she said.

It was the latest of a series of 52 such mass brawls between African American and Latino inmates at the jail this year.
