PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : SEA VIEW LEAGUE : El Toro Turns Turnover Tables in 33-9 Romp

El Toro has been plagued by turnovers for much of the season, but one quarter against Santa Margarita Friday night almost evened the breaks.

The Eagles turned over the ball three times in their first nine plays of the third quarter and El Toro scored 17 points en route to a 33-9 Sea View League victory in front of a homecoming crowd of about 1,200 at Trabuco Hills High.

Tied, 9-9, at halftime, Charger running backs Jamie Hanaway, Murle Sango and Joe Ader scored on second-half runs of 54, 65 and 47, respectively.

It was the first football game between El Toro (4-3, 1-1) and Santa Margarita (3-4, 1-1).

“Those big plays helped us, but I was really proud of our defense,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said. “It’s not easy playing against an option offense. I thought we did a good job tonight.”

El Toro scored on its first two possessions of the opening half, first on a 25-yard run by Hanaway, then on a 27-yard field goal by Chad Johnson.

But Santa Margarita’s defense held the Chargers to two yards in their last two possessions of the half. Eagle quarterback Chad Collins connected with Matt Nickels for a 25-yard touchdown with 1:01 left. On El Toro’s next play, Brian Wilson was intercepted by Matt Ahmer at the Charger 49 and Ryan Korinke kicked a school-record 47-yard field goal as time expired.

The second half belonged to El Toro, however. The Eagles never ventured into Charger territory. Hanaway scored on the first play and Johnson kicked a career-best 45-yard field goal.

Hanaway finished with 104 yards in 14 carries. Sango had 88 in nine.
