1905-Christy Mathewson threw three shutouts, including one on one day’s rest, as John McGraw’s New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in five games, all shutouts.

1911-Frank Baker hit two home runs in the Series, earning the nickname Home Run Baker, as Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Giants in six games.

1919-In the Black Sox scandal, eight Chicago White Sox agreed to intentionally lose the Series to the Cincinnati Reds for $100,000. The Reds won, five games to three.

1924-Walter Johnson won Game 7 in relief after losing two starts as the Washington Senators won their first World Series.

1932-Babe Ruth’s final Series featured his “Called Shot” in Game 3 in which he did or didn’t point to center field before hitting a home run there. The Yankees swept the Cubs.

1941-A passed ball in Game 4 by the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Mickey Owen on strike three with two outs in the ninth led to four runs and a five-game Series victory for the Yankees.

1946-The St. Louis Cardinals’ Enos Slaughter scored from first on a single in the eighth inning to win game 7 against the Boston Red Sox, 4-3.

1954-Willie Mays’ over-the-shoulder basket catch of Vic Wertz’s drive in Game 1 propelled the New York Giants to a sweep of the Cleveland Indians.

1956-Don Larsen threw a perfect game on Oct. 8, striking out seven in Game 5 for the Yankees, who defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in seven games.

1960-The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees on Bill Mazeroski’s leadoff home run in the bottom of ninth inning of Game 7.

1969-The once hapless 1962 expansion New York Mets stunned the Baltimore Orioles in five games, earning the nickname “Miracle Mets.”

1971-Roberto Clemente reached his career pinnacle, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Orioles in seven games. Clemente, who batted .414, died after 1972 season.

1975-The Reds’ seven-game victory was overshadowed by the image of Carlton Fisk frantically waving his arms as his 12th-inning home run won Game 6.

1977-Reggie Jackson hit three home runs against the Dodgers in Game 6 to clinch the Series for the Yankees.

1978-Bob Welch struck out Reggie Jackson, who fouled off three full-count pitches, in the ninth with two runners on base to win Game 2; the Yankees won the Series in six games.

1986-Mookie Wilson’s ground ball went through the legs of Boston first baseman Bill Buckner, allowing the game-winning run in Game 6. The Mets then won Game 7.

1988-An injured Kirk Gibson hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Dennis Eckersley to win Game 1 and the Dodgers went on to defeat the A’s in five.

1989-The Earthquake Series was won by the Oakland A’s in four games, but only after Game 3 was postponed for 10 days after an earthquake hit the Bay Area.

1993-Joe Carter’s three-run home run with one out in the ninth inning of Game 6 clinched the Series for the Toronto Blue Jays.

1994-The World Series is canceled because of a labor dispute.
