CAMARILLO : 2 Masked Men Rob Federal Credit Union
Two masked men, including one whose blue bandanna kept slipping off his face, robbed a federal credit union in Camarillo after stealing a getaway car in Sherman Oaks, authorities said.
A blue 1977 Buick was found nearby, its engine still running, after the men held up Point Mugu Federal Credit Union at gunpoint at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, FBI Special Agent Larry Dick said.
Armed with a large-caliber handgun, one man ordered the dozen customers and employees to drop to the floor while he leaped over the counter to rifle the tellers’ cash drawers, Ventura County Sheriff’s Detective Dan Place said.
One of the men wore a ski mask and the other a blue bandanna that didn’t stay in place, Dick said. “He would pull it up into place, and then it would slide down again. He kept fidgeting with it.”
Because of the blue bandanna and the fact the car was stolen in Sherman Oaks, investigators suspect that the bandits belong to a Los Angeles-area street gang, Dick said. He said they probably abandoned the stolen car, which had been taken sometime the night before, and escaped in another.
The credit union on East Daily Drive was the 18th financial institution robbed this year in Ventura County, compared to 42 by this time last year, Dick said.
