Stenstrom, Cardinal Get Help From Beavers : Pacific 10: The quarterback passes for three touchdowns; Oregon State commits four turnovers.

Stanford earned its first Pacific 10 victory Saturday against Oregon State but some of the credit has to go to the Beavers.

Oregon State turned over the ball four times, including two fumbles the Cardinal converted for touchdowns in a 35-29 victory.

“When you play any team in the Pac-10, and you turn the ball over they are going to make you pay,” said Oregon State Coach Jerry Pettibone. “And that’s what Stanford did to us today.”

Stanford quarterback Steve Stenstrom completed 19 of 32 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns. He threw touchdown passes of 46 and 25 yards to Justin Armour in the first quarter and 17 yards to Brian Manning early in the second to give the Cardinal, 2-4-1 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-10, a 21-0 lead.

The Beavers (2-5, 1-4) scored on their next three possessions, evening the score with a one-yard touchdown run by Don Shanklin before the half that capped a 90-yard drive.

Anthony Bookman ran 23 yards and jumped a defender in the third quarter for the first of his two touchdowns to put Stanford ahead to stay at 28-21, ending an 81-yard drive.

Stanford snapped a four-game losing streak with 486 total yards.

The Beavers, first in the Pac-10 in rushing and third nationally, racked up 372 yards on the ground and 427 overall. J.J. Young carried 20 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns for the Beavers. Shanklin, the Beavers’ wishbone quarterback who had 159 yards rushing against UCLA the previous week, was held to 12. He also threw the first interception of his career.
