Penn St. Remains No. 1 in Poll

Second-ranked Colorado and No. 3 Nebraska stayed on course for a Big Eight showdown Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

The Buffaloes closed within four points of No. 1 Penn State in The Associated Press college football poll after defeating Kansas State, 35-21, Saturday. The Nittany Lions, who led Colorado by 13 points last week, were idle.

Penn State (6-0) received 19 first-place votes and 1,486 points, while Colorado (7-0) got 16 firsts and 1,482 points from a nationwide media panel.

Nebraska (8-0) received 24 first-place votes and 1,461 points after defeating Missouri, 42-7.

USC, after a 61-0 victory over California, re-entered the poll at No. 25. The Trojans (5-2) are 23rd in the coaches’ poll.

Hockey

The NHL is expected to cancel some games and cut the 84-game schedule by as many as 10 games. The number of games will be reduced depending on the length of the lockout, which erased 132 games in its first 23 days. Commissioner Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow, executive director of the NHL Players Assn., spoke several times Friday to discuss schedule changes and the elimination of neutral-site games, but did not set up formal talks. They have not negotiated since Oct. 11 but are expected to meet this week.

Their tension resurfaced when Goodenow denounced the NHL for sending a package of documents to 10 player agents Friday claiming they had not been fully informed about the negotiations. Goodenow called the action “disruptive.”

Tennis

Sweden’s Stefan Edberg defeated defending champion Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and won the $763,500 Marlboro Championships in Hong Kong.

Top-seeded Michael Chang won the Salem Open tournament in Beijing for the second consecutive time, beating Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 7-5, 7-5.

Marc Rosset of Switzerland defeated Jim Courier, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), to win the Lyon Open in France.

Jana Novotna defeated fellow Czech Helena Sukova, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4, in the final of the Brighton International indoor tournament in England.

Texas senior Kelly Pace won her first ITA Collegiate Gland Slam singles title, defeating UCLA junior Keri Phebus, 6-2, 6-1, in the final of the Riviera Women’s All-American Championships at Riviera Country Club.

Miscellany

Charlotte Hornet forward Larry Johnson, who was expected to be sidelined up to eight weeks, doesn’t have a stress fracture in his left foot after all and might be ready for the team’s season-opener.

Former major leaguer Dan Gladden scored on Tatsunori Hara’s hit as the Yomiuri Giants defeated the Seibu Lions, 1-0, tying the best-of-seven Japan Series at one game apiece.

The United States remained undefeated in the Women’s World Volleyball Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, defeating Japan, 15-8, 6-15, 15-7, 15-7.

Arsenal defeated Coventry, 2-1, in an English Premier Division soccer match. U.S. national team forward Roy Wegerle scored on a penalty kick for Coventry.

French sailor Isabelle Autissier became the first woman to win a leg of the BOC Challenge yacht race, the Class I (50 to 60 feet) title and overall victory for the first leg of the single-handed around-the-world race in Charleston, S.C.
