Danny Kanell, who has struggled in Florida State’s last two games, will continue as the starting quarterback, while redshirt freshman Thad Busby will be his backup, Coach Bobby Bowden said Monday.

Kanell, who has been intercepted four times without throwing a touchdown pass in the last two games, still leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense with an average of 241.5 yards. But Kanell missed open receivers in the end zone Saturday on two drives that resulted in no points.

The ninth-ranked Seminoles (5-1, 5-0 ACC) will play No. 16 Duke (7-0, 4-0 ACC) on Saturday.

Brook Berringer, who has been bothered by a partially collapsed lung, is expected to start at quarterback for No. 3 Nebraska against No. 2 Colorado on Saturday. Backup Matt Turman suffered an arm injury Saturday against Missouri.

Florida coach Steve Spurrier declined to name who will start at quarterback Saturday against Georgia, but players say he told them it will be Danny Wuerffel, not senior Terry Dean. . . . The Gator Bowl, which was passed over by the Bowl Alliance in August, struck a deal to get the runners-up from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East for the game in Jacksonville, Fla. . . . Pittsburgh Coach Johnny Majors is urging injured running back Curtis Martin to return as a fifth-year senior next fall. Martin, who led all NCAA Division I-A rushers after a 251-yard season opener against Texas, hasn’t played since suffering a severe ankle injury in Pitt’s second game and isn’t expected to return this season.
