Despite Wyche’s Tough Talk, Buccaneers Still Featherweights

Share

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost, 41-16, to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Candlestick Park, Coach Sam Wyche said of his team’s aggressive style of play:

“We didn’t come here to play courtesy football. At least we wanted to establish toughness, that we were a mean . . . nasty football team.”

Comment from C.W. Nevius of the San Francisco Chronicle: “Here’s a suggestion. If you want to look mean, why don’t you start by taking that plumed fop with the pencil-thin mustache off the side of your helmet?

Different view: Larry Guest of the Orlando Sentinel in Florida recalls that former Washington Redskin quarterback Sonny Jurgensen used to throw annual back-yard parties for his offensive linemen.

One year the linemen asked Sonny’s 5-year-old son, Hans, if he knew what his dad’s jersey number was. It was 9 but he said 6 and was teased about it.

Sonny retorted, “That’s because, thanks to you goons, every time he sees me I’m upside down.”

Collector’s item: Woody Woodburn of the Ventura Star-Free Press writes that regardless of how well Michael Jordan plays for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League, he’s a bargain, considering he gets only $16 a day in meal money.

“I mean, his endorsement on the back of a check is worth about three times that.”

Selective memory: Fritz Shurmur, a former Ram defensive coordinator who now holds the same position with the Green Bay Packers, on defensive end Reggie White:

“I know there is no one in the league playing at his level right now, and I doubt that anyone ever has.”

Hey, Fritz, ever hear of Deacon Jones, the Rams’ Hall of Fame defensive end who had an estimated 180 quarterback sacks before the statistic became official in 1982?

Is it worth it? More on the llamas used as caddies at a golf course in Horsham, Pa.

Their use requires a foursome because the animals must carry two bags apiece for balance and walk the course in pairs to ensure that the animals behave.

A handler must also go along to keep them from wandering away.

Say what? Greg Hansen of the Arizona Daily Star commenting on Arizona’s game with Oregon on Saturday at Eugene, Ore.:

“It will be the biggest game in Oregon history, without question.”

Is it possible that Hansen forgot about Oregon’s Rose Bowl game with Ohio State in 1958?

Looking back: On this day in 1969, the Oakland Raiders beat the San Diego Chargers, 24-12, tying the AFL record for consecutive regular-season games without a loss at 15.

Trivia answer: Michigan Stadium at the University of Michigan with a seating capacity of 102,501.

Quotebook: Junior Seau, San Diego Charger linebacker: “Football is a chess game and I’m very good at chess. Move your pawn against my bishop, I’ll counter that move to beat you.”
