CULVER CITY: The motto of the City Council here is “Just Say No” when it comes to Propositions 187 and 188 on the November ballot. Council members voted this week to send letters to the editors of local newspapers, asking that voters oppose the two controversial propositions.
The council’s discussion of Proposition 187 brought six students to the meeting from West Los Angeles College, Santa Monica College and Culver City High School. They applauded the council’s decision to oppose the measure, which would leave illegal immigrants without access to health services and education.
“If you ever need me to speak for you on behalf of the Latino community, I’d be happy to do that,” Richard Alvarez, one of the students, told the council. Alvarez requested that the council permit the students to lead a “peaceful demonstration” against the ballot measure in Culver City.
While the council is concerned about illegal immigration, Proposition 187 is not the answer, explained Vice Mayor Steve Gourley. However, the Culver City Chamber of Commerce has taken a position in favor of the measure.
