LOS ANGELES COUNTY : ACLU Gives Police, Fire Chiefs an ‘F’ in Recruitment

Share

Officials from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California this week blasted the region’s fire and police chiefs, saying they have not tried hard enough to recruit women and minorities.

Allan Parachini said an ACLU study that he oversaw shows that the racial and gender makeup of Southern California’s fire and police departments do not match those of the cities they represent.

“If (this study) is a report card, these departments probably get an ‘F’ for their diversity right now,” Parachini told reporters at a news conference.

The ACLU’s study found that Southern California’s police and fire departments are still segregated by race and gender, although some of the larger departments have made progress in recruiting women and minorities.

The report concludes that police and fire departments are still the domain of white males, even when the populations they serve are more of a mix.
