Royal Assistant Quina Sues Simi Valley District

Stan Quina, a volunteer assistant football coach at Royal High, has filed suit against the Simi Valley Unified School District and Simi Valley High principal Kathryn Scroggin.

In the suit, Quina claims he was promised a $1,600-a-year position on the Royal coaching staff and that he was damaged by slanderous comments Scroggin and district representatives made accusing him of misappropriating school funds while he was a coach at Simi Valley.

Quina alleges he was promised a position in December 1993, but the district “breached the oral agreement by refusing to hire (Quina) and by making unsubstantiated accusations against (Quina),” the suit reads.

Quina refused comment on the case Thursday.

Scroggin and Supt. Mary Beth Wolford referred inquiries to Leon Mattingley, assistant superintendent in charge of personnel for the district. Mattingley said Thursday that he has not received a copy of the complaint.

Quina’s attorney, Louise Cowen, said she will notify the defendants of the suit within two weeks.

In the suit, Quina requests $1,600 plus an unspecified amount for punitive damages. The case is to be heard by a jury within one year, according to the complaint.
