The gunman who fatally wounded another man in Lake Los Angeles late Wednesday was identified Thursday as Alfred Abel, 40, but sheriff’s investigators said they are uncertain whether criminal charges will be filed in the case.

Sgt. Mike Lee said Abel shot a 38-year-old Palmdale man who had assaulted Abel’s girlfriend. Lee said it was unclear whether Abel was seeking revenge or acting to save the woman’s life when he fired.

“At this point there are some circumstances that are a little unusual,” the homicide investigator said.

Lee said he would present his reports today to a deputy district attorney, who will determine whether criminal charges should be filed against Abel. Abel remained in jail at the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station Thursday, awaiting that decision.

The name of the man he shot was being withheld, pending notification of the man’s family.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in front of Abel’s house in the 17600 block of East Highacres Avenue. The wounded man was airlifted to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, where he died about 30 minutes later, deputies said.
