PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : The Obvious Solution to Montana Sought

Share

It’s no secret that in order for the Raiders to end their six-game losing streak at Kansas City on Sunday, they will have to stop Chief quarterback Joe Montana. Getting it done, however, will be a different story.

“You have to keep constant pressure in order to throw him off rhythm,” linebacker Winston Moss said. “(The Chiefs) try to give you all kind of looks and run the ball to keep you honest, but the main thing they try to do is pass the ball.”

After being injured for several games last season, Montana has remained healthy in passing for more than 300 yards in four games this season. He has completed 64.1% of his passes for 2,151 yards and 11 touchdowns, while being sacked only eight times.

Another key for the Raiders will be how well they match up physically with Kansas City. In their three losses, the Chiefs were overmatched in the trenches.

“That’s the only way you can beat them,” said Moss, who is fourth on the team in tackles with 41. “We’re going to have to out-physical them and outplay them in order to come away with a win.”

Left tackle Gerald Perry, who broke his left ankle against Miami Oct. 16, had his cast removed Thursday, but he is not expected to return to practice for the next two weeks.

Tailback Greg Robinson, the team’s top rusher last season, began practicing with the team this week. The Raiders have three weeks before they have to make a roster move with him, but until then, Robinson will work with the scout team.

Rookie tailback Calvin Jones has worked ahead of Tyrone Montgomery as a backup to Harvey Williams this week in practice. Jones, a third-round pick from Nebraska, has not played this season but was activated for the first time last week against Atlanta.
