Flanders, who has finished first in all five of her races, won a stretch-long duel with stablemate Serena’s Song in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Saturday, but suffered a cannon-bone injury to her right foreleg and will undergo surgery Monday.

Trainer Wayne Lukas said a pin will be inserted into the filly’s leg and she is expected to race again. Wayne McIlwraith, one of the veterinarians on duty at Churchill Downs, said the injury is similar to the one suffered by Dehere, last year’s champion 2-year-old colt. Dehere is training for a comeback.

The battle between Flanders and Serena’s Song reminded William T. Young, the owner of Flanders, of the 1988 Distaff, when Personal Ensign nosed out Winning Colors in what is considered by many to be the most exciting Breeders’ Cup race ever run. One of Flanders’ victories, in the Matron at Belmont Park, was taken away because she tested positive for an illegal drug. Another laboratory disagreed with that result, and the matter is still in dispute.

Pat Day pulled up Flanders shortly after crossing the wire. “She was decidedly off (favoring her leg),” Day said. “I rode her awfully hard coming down the stretch. I didn’t want to take a chance, and I opted to get off her.”

Flanders was taken by van off the track. Lukas suspected that she might be hurting when she didn’t switch lead feet, from the left to the right, in the stretch.

Flanders and her entrymate, Cat Appeal, went off as the 2-5 favorite. Serena’s Song finished four lengths ahead of Stormy Blues, the third-place finisher. Flanders’ time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:45 1/5.
