GOLF ROUNDUP : Faldo Dominates, Then Is Disqualified

Nick Faldo of England had a six-stroke lead with six holes to play when he was disqualified from the Alfred Dunhill Masters in Bali, Indonesia, on Sunday for removing a stone from a bunker the previous day.

Canadian Jack Kay, with a 72 on Sunday and a 277 total, won the tournament that Faldo dominated after breaking the course record with a 63 in the second round.

“I’ve broken the rules. It’s a shame for me, the sponsors and the event,” Faldo said.

Fred Couples had a hole in one on the 168-yard 11th hole, the first of his career, to help him win the Kapalua International in Hawaii for the second consecutive year. Couples shot a three-under-par 70 for a 72-hole total of 11-under 279, two strokes better than Bob Gilder.

Ernie Els made up a five-stroke deficit in six holes to beat Fred Funk by three strokes and win the inaugural Sarazen World Open Championship at Braselton, Ga., and its $350,000 first prize. Els shot a seven-under 65, including a 30 on the back nine, for a 273 total, 15 under. . . . South Korean Ko Woo-soon defeated Betsy King on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Toray Queens Cup, the final event of the LPGA season, at Kurimotomachi, Japan. Laura Davies of Britain won the LPGA money race with $687,201 to $659,426 for Beth Daniel. . . . Jumbo Ozaki shot a nine-under 63 and won the Daiwa International by 15 strokes over Fuzzy Zoeller at Hatoyama, Japan.
