The Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, started out as a net depot, repairing steel nets designed to keep Japanese submarines out of U.S. harbors.

In the 1960s, it became a full-fledged weapons station where workers assembled part of the Saturn 5 rocket system used in the Apollo and Skylab space missions.

The weapons station is now the only West Coast base that loads Tomahawk missiles onto ships.

The procedure is called “Tomahawk in a can” because the Tomahawks are loaded into missile-firing canisters, which are then loaded below deck on ships.
