LOS ANGELES : City Extends Curbside Quake Removal Program

The Los Angeles City Council has approved a six-month extension beyond Jan. 17 for a free curbside earthquake debris removal program.
The council extended the deadline even though federal funding for the program will end on the first anniversary of the Northridge quake. Officials said many property owners may not finish repairs by then.

Debris removal--A story in Friday’s editions of The Times incorrectly reported that the Los Angeles City Council had approved a six-month extension beyond Jan. 17 for a free curbside earthquake debris removal program. In fact, the council merely asked federal officials for money that would allow the extension if funding were approved.
As part of the plan, public works officials will begin notifying owners to dispose on their own of any curbside debris not related to earthquake damage, such as tree trimmings and yard clippings. If owners do not comply, city workers will remove the yard waste and bill each owner about $500 to $700 plus administrative costs.
