CANOGA PARK : Bomb Casing at Curb Prompts Evacuation

Share

A Canoga Park neighborhood was evacuated Thursday morning after a 250-pound bomb casing was left on the street for earthquake debris pickup, police said.

Bomb squad investigators examined the three-foot-long, gray metal casing from World War II that was left at the curbside with other debris outside of a home in the 20800 block of Bassett Street in Canoga Park. The bomb was reported by neighbors, said Sgt. William Maarschalk of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Valley Division.

“The bomb was completely gutted inside and they quickly determined that it was not a threat,” said Maarschalk. “Some residents were apparently cleaning out their garage and put it out on the side of street.”

About 50 residents of Bassett Street were allowed to return to their homes after half an hour.

No charges were filed against the owners of the home, but some neighbors were plenty worried.

“People have to be more discriminatory with the stuff they put out on the street,” said Dorothy Green, who lives with her husband a few houses away from where the bomb casing was found. “We knew it was a bomb, but we didn’t know if it was live or not.”
