A 23-year-old suspected burglar was stabbed in the neck early Friday by a Ventura man who confronted the suspect in his house, authorities said.

Michael Byron McCullar of Ventura was stabbed during a fight with the resident after McCullar broke through a window in a house in the 1000 block of South Saticoy Avenue, Ventura Police Sgt. Roger Nusted said.

Nusted said the resident was awakened by the sound of glass breaking as McCullar entered the home around 1:30 a.m. He confronted McCullar, and a fight ensued in which McCullar was stabbed on the left side of the neck, police said.

After sustaining the injury, McCullar fled the house on a bicycle, apparently bleeding profusely from his neck wound, Nusted said.

McCullar bicycled to a house on the 10000 block of Darling Road, where he asked a resident for help. Nusted said the resident called authorities and McCullar was arrested on suspicion of burglary and transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.

A nursing spokeswoman at the hospital said McCullar was in fair condition late Friday.
