HOLLYWOOD PARK : Urbane Takes Moccasin in Stride

Going from victory in a maiden claimer to success in a stakes is a parlay trainer Brian Mayberry and owners Jan, Mace and Samantha Siegel had pulled off before.

Two years ago, Zealous Connection followed a victory over $50,000 rivals with a convincing score in the Landaluce.

A month after Urbane won her debut by seven lengths for the same $50,000 price tag, the 2-year-old Citidancer filly rolled home by 3 1/2 lengths in the $79,100 Moccasin Stakes Saturday at Hollywood Park.

Closest to 7-5 favorite and runaway pacesetter Inthefastlane early, Urbane, the second longest shot in the field of five at 5-1, got the lead approaching the sixteenth pole and drew away. She completed the seven furlongs in a stakes-record 1:21 3/5 under Corey Black.

Ocean Cat, the 17-10 second choice, was 3 1/2 lengths in front of Inthefastlane, who fell apart after leading through a :44 4/5 half-mile and a 1:09 1/5 six furlongs.

Martial Reward, breaking her maiden in her 14th try, triggered a record superfecta payoff in the ninth race Friday night.

Trained by Ruben Cosme and ridden by John Atherton, the 3-year-old Martial Law filly paid $176.20 and was followed across the wire by 24-1 shot Monarchs Latinlady, 5-2 third choice Natural Value and 34-1 outsider Who The Heck Cares.

The superfecta, which requires a bettor to pick the first four finishers, paid $190,769.80. There was only one ticket with the 12-4-10-8 combination and it was purchased at Atlantic City. The previous record for a superfecta at Hollywood Park was $59,487.60 on July 25, 1993.

Horse Racing Notes

In something of a surprise, trainer Wayne Lukas said Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Tabasco Cat will run in the $400,000 Hollywood Derby a week from today. The Derby will be Tabasco Cat’s 12th start of the year and he has been worse than third only once. Included in his five victories are the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and his second behind Concern in the Breeders’ Cup pushed his 1994 earnings to $2,164,334.

There is a two-day carryover of $261,909.93 in the Pick Six.
