Two men were killed Sunday when their car slammed into a fire hydrant and then struck a light pole, authorities said.

Three other men in the same car were critically injured in the 4:50 a.m. accident on San Fernando Road near Paddock Street in Sylmar, said Los Angeles Police Officer Gary Weller.

The driver, Jesus Martinez Cardenas, 21, of Sylmar was traveling south on San Fernando Road when he lost control of his Plymouth Colt, leveled a fire hydrant, then struck a pole, Weller said. Cardenas died at the scene.
