THOUSAND OAKS : High School Band, Color Guard Place 1st

The Thousand Oaks High School band and color guard, competing against counterparts from Lompoc to San Diego, won the first Surf City Band Tournament in Huntington Beach.

The band was crowned the sweepstakes winner after competing against 13 other bands Saturday at Huntington Beach High School, said band publicist Christine Patti.

It was the third sweepstakes win for the band since Sept. 19.

With Bill Hoehne directing, the 114-member band and 22-member color guard marched on the field while playing selections from “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” Fun House, Variation 19 and Cirque de Soleil, a contemporary musical.

The band also placed first in the open class and won top individual awards for general effect, music, marching, percussion and color guard.

Dean Torrence, a member of the Jan and Dean pop music duo from the 1960s, presented the awards to the Thousand Oaks band.

On Saturday, the Thousand Oaks band will travel to Arcadia for a parade competition and then a field competition later in the evening at Savanna High School in Anaheim.
