SIMI VALLEY : City Subsidizes Police Car Purchase

Share

Faced with a substantial increase in the cost of police cars, the Simi Valley Police Department will receive a subsidy from the city to buy seven new cruisers.

The City Council on Monday agreed to pitch in an additional $23,000 to help cover the cost of the Chevrolet Caprices, which have increased in price by $5,000 each since last year, according to a staff report.

Prices have gone up because General Motors stopped subsidizing the sale of police cars, the report said.

The cruisers, which are purchased through the County of Los Angeles Cooperative Purchasing Program, now cost about $19,800 each. The department replaces police cars at 85,000 miles.
