Work will begin within the next month on a 12-mile route for bicyclists looping through Newbury Park, according to public works officials.

The scenic route, which was unanimously approved by the Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday, is designed for recreational and commuter use.

It will stretch along Lynn Road from Hillcrest Drive to Reino Road, down Reino to Conejo Road, connecting with the Rancho Conejo Industrial Park before again linking into Hillcrest.

The cost of grading the route, installing signs, producing maps for residents, increasing street sweeping and painting bike lanes on the road’s surface is expected to be about $7,000, according to a public works report.

Major intersections along the route will be equipped with sensors to detect the presence of bike tires, minimizing the time cyclists have to wait for traffic lights.

The loop will become the city’s second major bicycle route. The other route circles from Moorpark Road along Olsen Road, to Erbes Road and then Avenida de los Arboles to Westlake Boulevard and back to Moorpark from Hillcrest.

The city is also planning a loop through the Westlake area, which is expected to come before the council for approval in the next three months.
