SANTA MONICA : Mental Health Center to Be Rebuilt, Enlarged
The Santa Monica West Mental Health Center, severely damaged in the Northridge earthquake, will be rebuilt to double its original size with $5.2 million in government funds.
Most of the 13,250-square-foot facility was uninhabitable after the temblor, forcing the bulk of mental health professionals to work in trailers in the center’s parking lot.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing 45% of the reconstruction funds and County Supervisor Ed Edelman secured $1 million in county discretionary funds for the project. The balance will be paid over 20 years through the county’s capital funding program.
A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held Monday at the center’s 1525 Euclid St. location. Construction is expected to begin in July, 1996, and be completed in 1997. The center will open at an interim location, at 1752 Cloverfield Blvd. in Santa Monica, in July of next year.
