COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Donahue: The Week Is No Different

Share

There’s no Rose Bowl at stake for UCLA on Saturday, but that really hasn’t changed Coach Terry Donahue’s week.

“There isn’t as much media attention because we can’t get into the Rose Bowl, but the rest of it is the same,” said Donahue, on his way to a Thursday night function, with three others scheduled for today.

“This week, there’s always several reunions and get-togethers. . . . It’s no different if there’s a Rose Bowl or a national championship or anything else at stake,” he said.

Nostalgia I: Linebacker Rod Smalley was musing about practice and Spalding Field: “My last practice in pads. It’s kind of sad, really, but mixed. You hate to see it over, but it’s time to move on.” . . . Nostalgia II: Former UCLA coach Tommy Prothro, in town as part of the celebration of the 1954 Bruin national champions, addressed the team before practice. “I don’t really follow teams anymore,” he said. “I follow people, guys who played for me or coached with me. I follow Donahue.”
