NBA ROUNDUP : Sacramento Gets a Lift From Rookie
It took rookie Brian Grant exactly seven games to record his first double-double for the Sacramento Kings.
Grant, coming off the bench, scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Sacramento’s 96-88 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Sacramento on Sunday night.
“I’m still a rookie and there’s a lot of stuff I have to learn,” said Grant, a first-round pick from Xavier of Ohio.
With the game hanging in the balance, Grant scored 12 fourth-quarter points, including six of the last seven for the Kings. Fellow rookie Michael Smith scored six of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Portland 98, Detroit 96--Clifford Robinson scored 26 points and James Robinson, playing out of position at point guard, scored 24 as the Trail Blazers overcame a 35-point performance by Joe Dumars at Portland.
Clifford Robinson made two free throws with 15 seconds left to give Portland a 96-94 lead, and he made another with 8.7 seconds left to increase the lead to three.
James Robinson started in place of Rod Strickland, who went on the injured list Sunday with a slight fracture of his right wrist.
Point guards Terry Porter and Negele Knight were already on Portland’s injured list, and off-guard Clyde Drexler is out with a sprained right ankle.
