The 10th-graders at Reseda High currently enrolled in Humanitas, an inter-disciplinary learning program the school adopted this year, will be able to continue with the program in the 11th grade, said coordinator Elsie Ritchie-Mano.

This year, a core group of 27 sophomores have taken the theme, “Making the Most of Me,” and used it as to unify their studies in studio art, art history, biological science and English.

“Kids really get turned on when they see a link in what they are studying,” said Ritchie-Mano.

Next year, the same group will study American literature and U.S. history using the same approach, while still meeting the state requirements for the 11th-grade curriculum, Ritchie-Mano said. A new batch of 10th-graders will be recruited to the Humanitas program.

Schools throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District have been developing their own Humanitas programs designed to suit their learning environments.
