Highlights

This is the Golden West League’s inaugural season. Ocean View, Santa Ana, Servite and Westminster move from the Sunset League, and Saddleback and Tustin arrive from the Sea View League. Tustin, the Sea View co-champion, advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs, losing, 70-35, to Compton Dominguez. Point guard Doug Gottlieb, who signed with Notre Dame, averaged 18 points and 8.1 assists and was a Times all-county selection. Gottlieb was at his best during the postseason, causing opponents fits with his ability to dribble with ease through some tough defenses. Forward David Lalazarian averaged 14 points and was chosen first-team all-league. Servite finished third in the Sunset and made an impressive run in the Division III-AA playoffs, losing, 67-53, to Santa Margarita in the title game. Center Mark Seaton, who has signed with Stanford, averaged 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. He was a second-team all-league selection. Forward David Downs was a first-team pick with averages of 12 points and eight rebounds. Ocean View played well after earning an at-large bid to the Division II-AA playoffs, winning its first-round game, 55-53, in overtime against El Monte Mountain View. It pushed fourth-seeded Glendora before losing, 58-53, in the second round. Forward Dan McDonald was a big part of the Seahawks’ successful postseason. He averaged 10 points for the season and provided excellent defense and leadership with games on the line.
