Charles Barkley of the Phoenix Suns, who has yet to play this season because of a pulled stomach muscle, said he felt well enough to play in Wednesday night’s game against the Clippers.

“I could play tonight, but I don’t think they really need me against the Clips,” Barkley said after undergoing accupressure treatment from a specialist in traditional Chinese medicine. “I’m saving it up for (San Antonio center) David Robinson Saturday.”

Sir Charles was right.

The Suns didn’t need Barkley to beat the NBA’s only winless team, building a 39-point fourth-quarter lead en route to a 140-109 victory before a sellout of 19,023 at the America West Arena.

“We played like we were on the road,” Clipper Coach Bill Fitch said after watching his club extend its season-opening losing streak to 11 games, six shy of the NBA record set by the expansion Miami Heat in 1988.

Fitch, who has maintained his composure throughout the losing streak, was upset after the Clippers allowed the shorthanded Suns, who were without guard Kevin Johnson (sore left knee), forward Wayman Tisdale (sprained left ankle) and Barkley, to score their highest point total in 10 games this season.

“That thing right there,” Fitch said, pointing at a reporter’s tape recorder. “I could just take a bite out of it right now, I really could. For the first time I think losing is starting to affect them a little bit.”

Barkley feels for Fitch, the all-time leader in NBA coaching losses.

“I feel bad for Bill Fitch,” Barkley said. “He’s a nice man, but he’s going to have a long season.”

The Clippers will try for their first victory Friday afternoon, when they play the New Jersey Nets at the Sports Arena. The Clippers almost beat the Nets last Sunday at the Meadowlands, taking a 15-point lead before losing, 98-97.

Former Clipper Danny Manning had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists despite playing only five minutes in the second half as the Suns beat the Clippers for the seventh time in a row.

Guard Danny Ainge had 11 points, 12 assists and six rebounds. Rookie guard Trevor Ruffin, who was the Lakers’ final cut, had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. All 10 Suns who played scored in double figures as Phoenix set an America West Arena record by shooting 64.6%.

Manning, who spent the first 5 1/2 seasons of his NBA career with the Clippers before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks for Dominique Wilkins last February, feels sorry for the Clippers.

“I’ve got a lot of friends on that team and a lot of friends in the organization,” Manning said. “(Losing is) not fun. We went through a lot of hard times when I first got there.”

The Suns didn’t take long to dispose of the Clippers.

Victims of an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s 105-93 loss to the Chicago Bulls, the Clippers were outscored, 15-0, in a 3:46 span of the first quarter as the Suns took a 36-23 lead. Phoenix led by 19 points at halftime and 34 points going into the final quarter.

Clipper Notes

Lamond Murray, the Clippers’ top draft pick, had a season-high 30 points, making 12 of 22 shots. Murray scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. . . . Former Clipper guard Ron Harper, now with the Chicago Bulls, presented expensive watches to Clipper trainer Keith Jones and equipment manager Pete Serrano before Tuesday night’s game.

Charles Barkley, on the injured list because of a pulled stomach muscle, said his condition improved after visiting Cao Guoliang, a specialist in traditional Chinese medicine, who determined that his abdominal injury was caused by his chronically sore back. “It was amazing,” said Barkley, who plans to visit the accupressurist twice a week for the rest of the season. “He was the doctor for the premier and the vice premier of China and now he’s got the Chuckster.”
