COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Villanova Advances in Great Alaska Shootout
Eric Eberz scored a career-high 23 points and No. 21 Villanova had runs of 18-0 and 17-2 to defeat Alaska-Anchorage, 75-58, Thursday in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.
Eberz, a junior forward, scored 17 of Villanova’s 33 second-half points. Jason Lawson added 17 points and Kerry Kittles added 12.
The Wildcats (1-0), bigger and quicker than Division II Alaska-Anchorage at every position, led, 44-37, early in the second half before going on a 17-2 run which included three-pointers by Roscoe Harris and Eberz.
The Seawolves (4-1) were led by Jason Kaiser, who scored 21, and Dana Pope with 20 points and eight rebounds.
The Seawolves led, 26-23, late in the first half before the Wildcats scored 18 unanswered points over a four-minute span.
Villanova advanced to play the winner of Thursday’s late game between No. 5 Arizona and Minnesota.
