NEWPORT BEACH / COSTA MESA : School District Honors 3 Retiring Trustees

Share

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board saluted its three retiring members Tuesday with a reception and proclamations honoring their commitment to public education.

Retiring from the board are Roderick H. MacMillian, who began with the first NMUSD board in 1965 and served four terms as board president; and Sherry Loofbourrow and Forrest K. Werner, who joined the board in 1981 and served two terms each as board president.

“Of all the tremendous board members I’ve served with since the inception, since we gave birth to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, Sherry and Forrest are two of the best,” MacMillian said.

Loofbourrow, who was often at odds with MacMillian during their joint service, said the personality mix led to a blend of old and new approaches.

“It’s probably been showing, how frustrated each of us has been over the last couple of years,” she said.

The pre-meeting reception included kudos from Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach), Newport Beach City Councilwoman Jean H. Watt and Costa Mesa City Councilman Joe Erickson.

New trustees will be sworn in at the board’s next regular meeting Dec. 13. The new board will immediately have to solve overcrowding in the Newport Harbor attendance zone and grapple with dress code guidelines.
