SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sunny Hills was unable to stop Lompoc’s potent running game and lost, 28-0, in the second round of the Division VII playoffs Friday night at Buena Park High School.

The Lancers (5-7) were dominated on both sides of the ball. They had had zero yards rushing, only 110 yards passing and three first downs.

“Lompoc is a very physical team,” Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney said. “We haven’t played a team any better than them all year.”

The third-seeded Braves (11-1) took the lead on their first possession of the game. Senior running back Ed Wynn ran 54 yards on the Braves’ sixth play from scrimmage to make it 7-0 with 9 minutes 32 seconds left.

Lompoc’s defense then buckled down, and didn’t allow Sunny Hills past midfield the entire first half.

Braves quarterback Nick Terrones made his only mistake of the first half on the first play of the second quarter when his pass was intercepted by senior Eric Hernandez at the Lancers’ 44-yard line.

Terrones rebounded late in the quarter, connecting on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Wynn for a 13-0 lead with 1:53 left. Lompoc got the ball back before halftime, but Ray Hirzel missed on a 31-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Lompoc scored again on its first possession of the second half when Terrance Davis ran in from four yards out for a 20-0 lead.

Sunny Hills continued to struggle on offense, managing only two first downs through the first three quarters.

“Their rush gave (quarterback) Greg (Garand) some problems,” Devaney said. “Obviously, when you base your offense around the pass, you have to protect for it. Their pass rush threw a big wrench in our game plan.”

Lompoc capped the scoring when running back Peter Sousa scored on a 35-yard run with 5:12 left in the game.
