SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There was no doubt a longshot would advance to the Division V semifinals, it was just a matter of which team it would be.

El Toro proved to be the answer by defeating Loara, 21-3, in the second round Friday night at Trabuco Hills High.

El Toro will play Servite, a 7-0 winner over Villa Park, in the semifinals Saturday.

The Chargers (7-4-1) sneaked into the playoffs by virtue of a favorable coin flip, but their big-play offense has kept them there.

Loara, meanwhile, was still playing after El Dorado was disqualified for using an ineligible player and the Saxons upset Canyon in the first round.

After scoring a combined 17 touchdowns in its previous four games, El Toro scored three more Friday night against a Loara defense that had given up an average of eight points in its last seven games.

“We came up with some big plays tonight,” Charger Coach Mike Milner said. “We probably could have scored more but we missed some opportunities.”

El Toro did have a touchdown called back and missed two field goals, but the Chargers dominated the game on both sides of the ball.

The defense recorded five sacks and two interceptions, and the special teams blocked one punt and snuffed a fake on another.

On its second possession, El Toro moved the ball 64 yards in seven plays and scored on a 21-yard pass from Brian Wilson to a wide-open Murle Sango.

Wilson and Sango had teamed up on a 27-yard screen pass two plays earlier.

The Saxons (6-6) made it 7-3 in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Sean Vickers.

But El Toro put together a seven-play drive and took a 14-3 lead when Wilson rolled out and threw eight yards to Joe Ader for a touchdown with 7:53 left in the first half.

Ader put the game away in the third quarter when he took his only carry of the game 59 yards up the middle for a touchdown, giving El Toro a 21-3 lead.
