Marvelous Crown Wins the Japan Cup, Beating Paradise Creek Before 165,930
Marvelous Crown of Japan outran co-favorite Paradise Creek of the United States down the stretch Sunday to win the Japan Cup, the world’s richest horse race, by a nose.
The victory in front of a crowd of 165,930 at Tokyo Race Course was worth $1.74 million from a purse of $4.03 million, increasing Marvelous Crown’s career earnings to $4.16 million.
It was the 1,301st career victory for jockey Katsumi Minai, who earlier this year became Japan’s first Triple Crown winner in 10 years. He rode Narita Brian to victory in the Satsuki-sho, the Japan Derby and the Kikka-sho.
The 4-year-old Marvelous Crown, a winner in seven of 17 starts, finished 1 1/2 miles in 2 minutes, 23.6 seconds.
Japan’s Royce and Royce finished third.
