COSTA MESA — A USAir 737 blew a tire Monday afternoon while landing at John Wayne Airport but was able to come to a stop without major incident.
No passengers or crew members were injured, airport officials said.
Flight 1285 was arriving from Pittsburgh, Pa., at 12:20 p.m. when one of its right rear tires blew out as the aircraft touched the runway, said airport spokeswoman Pat Ware.
“It was a bit of an unusual landing and it took longer for the plane to stop,” Ware said. “Passengers were aware that it was not a normal landing.”
As a precaution, the Orange County Fire Department was called to the scene, but the six engines and two paramedic vans were not needed, officials said.
“The brakes did heat up a little bit, but there was no fire,” Ware said.
Ware said she could only recall two other similar incidents at the airport since 1991. The runway was closed for about one minute as crews cleared the area of tire debris.
