Court Official Seeks Post in L.A. County
Ventura County’s top court executive has applied for a similar job in Los Angeles County, several officials said Tuesday.
Sheila Gonzalez, who has earned praise for making the local court more efficient, is one of 49 people who have applied to become head administrator of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, said the officials, who asked not to be named.
Although most of her work is done behind the scenes, Gonzalez was in the spotlight earlier this year when the county’s judges raised her pay by 12.85%. With the raise, she earns $109,000 annually.
While several judges and others criticized the size of the $12,400 raise, Gonzalez’s supporters said she deserved it. They credit her with saving the county hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years and making the courts more efficient through the use of technology.
Gonzalez did not return several phone calls Tuesday. Neither did Melinda A. Johnson, Superior Court presiding judge and one of Gonzalez’s biggest supporters.
Albert Cortez, spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified Courts, said judges there should choose a finalist for the vacant job Dec. 14.
