SIMI VALLEY : Air Show to Kick Off Library Exhibit

Share

The thunder of antique war birds will roll through Simi Valley skies Saturday over the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to kick off the museum’s biggest exhibit ever, called “World War II: Personal Accounts.”

Fighters, bombers and trainers from World War II will put on an hourlong air show at 2 p.m. at the library, situated off Olsen Road just east of Simi Valley.

The Southern California Wing of the Confederate Air Force has gathered 17 planes for the show, including P-51 Mustang fighters, B-25 bombers and a Heinkel bomber that served as personal aircraft to Spanish Gen. Francisco Franco before it was refitted as a Luftwaffe bomber.

Sky divers will unfurl the American flag overhead to open the show, which will also include a big band concert featuring Oxnard’s Big John Herman Band.

The library exhibit opens at 10 a.m. Saturday, displaying 250 items documenting wartime life. Curators have collected letters, diaries and photographs from soldiers, sailors and Marines about their World War II service.

At the request of former President Reagan, all World War II veterans and their immediate families can enter the museum free during December. Admission for other adults is $4, $2 for seniors, and children under age 16 are admitted free.

The World War II exhibit runs through Feb. 28, and the library is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
