Bands Barter Toys for Tunes

Four local rock bands will play a benefit concert tonight at the San Clemente Elks Lodge to collect toys for underprivileged kids.

Performing, in order of appearance, are Loose Groove, Supernovice, Why? Things Burn and Pigmy Love Circus. To get in, bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at $5 or more to be donated to the children’s toy drive of the American Red Cross, Orange County Chapter. No cash will be accepted.

The show, open to those 21 and over, starts at 8 p.m. The Elks Lodge is at 1505 N. El Camino Real. Information: (714) 498-7444.

Harry Belafonte will sing with his new band, Djoliba, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. The program will be a mix of old and new tunes with an emphasis on African rhythms and Third World themes.

Belafonte, who recorded his signature “Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” more than 25 years ago and whose films include “Islands in the Sun,” has received numerous awards for his human rights efforts including the Martin Luther King Peace Prize and the Nelson Mandela Courage Award. An Emmy-winning television producer, he is working on an ABC miniseries dramatizing the history of apartheid in South Africa.

Tickets to the concert, $26 to $46, go on sale Sunday at Ticketmaster outlets and the center box office.
