Old Telephone Books Given New Lives

COSTA MESA — Don’t throw away your telephone books just yet. But if you do, drop them off at a recycling bin.
The deadline for depositing old telephone books in one of 10 city recycling bins in the city has been extended to Dec. 20 because of a delay in delivery of the new books by Pacific Bell, said Florine Reichle, the assistant manager of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
“We want to recycle as many books as we can, but we want residents to know that their new books won’t be on their doorsteps until sometime next week,” she said.
Once the new books are delivered, Reichle said, residents can drop off their old ones at a number of locations, including City Hall at 77 Fair Drive, Coastline Community College or Orange Coast College.
Other sites include Lions Park at 18th Street and Anaheim Avenue, Shiffer Park at 3143 Bear St. and Heller Park at 257 E. 16th St.
“The recycling program is really neat this year because the books are going to be recycled into new directories at a paper mill in the state of Washington,” said Reichle.
Last year, the city recycled 87 tons of telephone books, and sanitary district officials hope to surpass that amount this year in the name of a cleaner environment.
